Real Room: Retro Rockets and Robots

It’s sometimes difficult to achieve a modern aesthetic on a modest budget, but April refused to sacrifice style in this retro nursery she designed for her third son.  You can’t help but be inspired by her creative solutions!

This nursery also functions as a guest space thanks to the trundle daybed from Ikea.  April saved money on a rug by using a soft and shaggy bath mat from Target.  I love how the little Ikea wagon adds a pop of color and accents the blue in the bedding!  The robot decals over the daybed were colorful stickers that April sprayed white and arranged for contrast on the gray wall.  This project only cost $5!

The bedding is DwellStudio for Target’s Space Crib Set and April picked up the dresser, mirror and end table on craigslist for just $50.  With a little paint, these pieces have a fresh clean look that will function for a long time.  April also painted the little robot canvas on the right using extra paint from the mural wall.  Too cute!

April created the mod mural herself and the design will transition really well as the baby grows up.

This art wall located over the changing table is an inexpensive arrangement of Ikea and Walmart frames.  The UFO and the orange robot are works of art by the baby’s older brothers– so sweet and personal!

Instead of a mobile, April installed this IQ lamp over the crib. Being right by the rocking chair, the lamp will also be perfect as a bedtime reading lamp.  I love when things do double duty.  The pillow case on the rocker was made by April’s great-grandmother and she drew the robot outline on it with a white fabric pen.  It looks teriffic!

I am also super impressed with this DIY lamp reno.

Without the expense of replacing the outdated fixture, April totally achieved a spacey, retro look!

The room was finished off with lots of fun and colorful accessories that enhance the look she was going for.

April made the little red robot doll herself and a friend knit the funky little “ugly doll” for the nursery.

April, you did a fabulous job putting this room together for your upcoming new arrival.  I can tell he is awaited with great love and excitement.  Thank you so much for sharing his room and all your fun and creative ideas with us.
